New Head Of School Of Life Sciences At Napier

17 February 2009

Napier University has appointed a new Head of School of Life Sciences.

Professor Mark Darlison joins Napier University from Nottingham Trent University (NTU) where he was Professor of Neuroscience. In his former role he taught pharmacology and neuroscience to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, sat on and chaired a number of academic committees, and was involved in course development.

Professor Darlison said: "I am delighted to be joining Napier University. I have two main aims. The first is to increase international recruitment, particularly at postgraduate level, taking advantage of the excellent teaching skills across the School. The second is, as a research-active Head, to make a significant contribution to research and third-stream income generation. I want the School of Life Sciences to be the place of choice for both students and staff."

His current research interests revolve around the application of molecular biology to problems in neurobiology and he has recently worked with the Sports Science team at NTU on a research project investigating the influence of genetic polymorphism on human physiological responses.

Professor Darlison, originally from Leicester, has built up an impressive CV since completing his PhD in Chemistry and Molecular Sciences at the University of Warwick. Career highlights include holding three postdoctoral positions including one at the Institut Curie, in Orsay, France, a staff scientist position at the MRC Molecular Neurobiology Unit, in Cambridge, and the publication of some 80 refereed papers. He is currently acting as an international panel member for the Research Council of Norway as well as being on the Editorial Boards of the journals, Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology and Invertebrate Neuroscience.

Professor Darlison has been invited to speak at and Chair sessions at more than 50 international scientific meetings, and has received three awards (in 1995, 1997 and 2000) from the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie for his research.

Professor Joan Stringer, Principal & Vice Chancellor at Napier University, said: "We are thrilled to be welcoming Mark into the School of Life Sciences and are in no doubt that he will be an immense asset to the University and its students."
