Budding Artists Have Designs On £2,000 Cash Prize For Their School

Wildlife expert and television presenter, Kate Humble, is calling on all school children to help raise awareness of the deadly tropical disease, malaria, giving them the chance to win £2,000 for their school.

Kate, who has joined forces with the Malaria Awareness Campaign to help educate children about malaria, is looking for them to create an information-packed logo for Malaria Awareness Week (11-17 May). The winning design will become this year's official campaign logo and the stickers will be sent to hundreds of GP surgeries around the country.

Having suffered from malaria twice herself, Kate is keen to raise awareness of the deadly disease. She says: 'Every year, between 1,500 and 2,000 British travelers return home with malaria.

'People tend to think that malaria is a disease that only affects people in the developing world, however, more and more British people are traveling further afield to more exotic destinations where malaria exists.

'That's why it's more important than ever that people are educated about the risks of contracting malaria and the actions they can take to prevent them from contracting the disease. We hope that through this campaign, we can spread the word to families right across the UK.'   

Campaign information letters are being sent to schools throughout the UK to encourage them to participate. Interested school children and teachers are also invited to visit www.malariahotspots.co.uk or pick up a copy of the 149 issue of First News (available 27 March) to get involved. No purchase is necessary and anyone between the ages of 6 and 13 can submit an entry - even if their class isn't participating.

The deadline for entering is Friday 10 April 2009. Eleven regional finalists will then be selected and their designs uploaded to www.malariahotspots.co.uk where a public online vote will determine the overall winner. Voting will take place from 17 to 24 April and the winner will be announced on www.malariahotspots.co.uk and in First News on 1 May.

To celebrate their success, all 11 finalists will win a customised trophy and £50 worth of book vouchers. The winning design will become the official logo for the 2009 Malaria Awareness Campaign and will be made into thousands of stickers, which will be distributed to GP surgeries throughout the country. The winning entrant's school will also receive a £2,000 grant from the campaign sponsors, GlaxoSmithKline Travel Health.

  • 1) Kate Humble is a television presenter mainly for the BBC, specialising in wildlife and science programmes. She is best known for presenting Animal Park and Springwatch. Kate has a new programme out in March on BBC1 called The Hottest Place on Earth, which sees her travelling to Ethiopia in Africa. Kate has contracted malaria twice, both times whilst in Africa.
