Egypt & Morocco Challenge The Canaries And Caribbean As Top Winter Sun Destinations
03 November 2009
Guaranteed sunshine and value for money have seen Egypt and Morocco become the fastest growing holiday destinations this winter, easyJet revealed today.
The low fares airline has launched a new route from Luton to Sharm El Sheik in Egypt this week, with the first flight proving to be one of the strongest sellers at already more than 90 per cent sold out. Additional flights from Gatwick to Agadir and Manchester to Marrakech have also been launched to cope with increasing demand.
easyJet claims that despite the continuing recession, Brits are still determined to find destinations that offer both value and sunshine.
Paul Simmons, easyJet's UK general manager, said: "Many Brits, including those who chose to holiday at home this year, are looking to jet off this winter as an antidote to this summer's disappointing weather.
"While traditional winter sun destinations such as the Canaries are still very popular, we have seen a surge in demand for destinations in Egypt and Morocco.
"Brits are more adventurous and will travel further afield to get more for their money. The guaranteed sunshine and facilities on offer provide the extra incentive.
"In addition, the new regular low-cost flights to these destinations give customers the flexibility to take shorter breaks, rather than being restricted to traditional seven and 14-night package holiday durations."
The claims were supported by an American Express report out this week that revealed Egyptian currency sales are up 60 percent on last year as increasing numbers of Brits holiday in the country.
TravelSupermarket.com agreed that Egypt and Morocco were on track to receive a record number of UK visitors this summer.
Bob Atkinson, travel expert at TravelSupermarket.com, said: "We have seen a steadily increasing demand for destinations such as Morocco and Egypt over the last 12 months.
"There is a great range of accommodation available in places such as Marrakech and Sharm el Sheikh which when coupled with the guaranteed sun makes North Africa a great holiday option."
easyJet has launched new routes to from Luton to Sharm El Sheik in Egypt, Gatwick to Agadir and Manchester to Marrakech in Morocco over the coming days in response to growing demand. The airline already flies from Gatwick to both Sharm and Marrakech.
