Willie Haughey Donates £100,000 To Unicef

07 January 2011

Glasgow business tycoon Willie Haughey has donated £100,000 to children's charity UNICEF.

As UNICEF does not have an office in Scotland, Willie presented his cheque to Manchester United manager and UNICEF ambassador Sir Alex Ferguson.

Willie Haughey, whose City Refrigeration group employs 11,000 around the world, decided to make his donation after reading about the charity's work with the flood-hit children in Pakistan.

Willie said: "The crisis in Pakistan is far from over and with winter snows already sweeping the country, more children are going to die from respiratory infections and malnutrition.

"Having just experienced the recent cold snap in Scotland I felt I would like to do something for these poor kids, many of whom have no homes, no crops and no food because of the floods.

"In addition, polio is now on the rampage in Pakistan. Polio was something we thought had been eradicated from the world but in the past year, there have been around 130 new cases of polio in Pakistan compared with only 89 in 2009."

Willie Haughey made the donation from his City Charitable Trust which has given more than £5 million to good causes in recent years.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of UNICEF, Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Willie Haughey and his wife Susan have been friends for many years, their fantastic generosity through their Charitable Trust is much appreciated, this latest donation will be put to good use by UNICEF."
