Once thought of as a holiday for the older generation, the growth of the cruise market is showing no signs of slowing down and experts predict recent ash disruption is likely to create an increased demand in the number of people looking to sail from the UK.
One in 12 holidays booked in the UK is now a cruise according to travelsupermarket.com. The website has seen a surge in people wanting to sail abroad from UK ports since the beginning of the year - cutting out flights and enabling time-tight holidaymakers to make the most of their time away.
This trend is set to only be heightened further following the wide spread volcanic disruption over the last couple of weeks as holidaymakers become more open to flight free travels. In addition, holidaymakers sailing from the UK do not pay baggage charges, a major bone of contention for those travelling on low cost flights.
There are 14 new ships launching this year, bringing capacity for an additional 28,000 passenger berths. Three of these new ships are dedicated to the UK market: Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Eclipse, Cunard's Queen Elizabeth and P&O Cruises' Azura.
While the world's second largest liner, The Independence of the Seas, is the first Royal Caribbean cruise liner to be home ported in the UK sailing full-time from Southampton and made its first departure last Sunday (25 April).
Cruise is the fastest growing holiday type, the cruise industry grew by four percent in 2009 while the Passenger Shipping Association is projecting 1.65 million people will take a cruise in 2010.
Bob Atkinson, travel expert from travelsupermarket.com, said: "The cruise market has continued to grow despite a difficult couple of years in the UK economy. The great value cruise holidays offer in terms of added value - such as sporting activities, spa treatments, exemplary food and drinks, and shore excursions and a huge array of west end style entertainment - has made cruising an attractive option for many holidaymakers, in fact customer receive the vast majority of the value for no additional cost leaving outlay solely for drinks and incidentals. A fantastic way for budget conscious travellers to control costs."
