Once thought of as a holiday for the older generation, the growth of the cruise market is showing no signs of slowing down and experts predict recent ash disruption is likely to create an increased demand in the number of people looking to sail from the UK.

This trend is set to only be heightened further following the wide spread volcanic disruption over the last couple of weeks as holidaymakers become more open to flight free travels. There are 14 new ships launching this year, bringing capacity for an additional 28,000 passenger berths. Three of these new ships are dedicated to the UK market: Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Eclipse, Cunard's Queen Elizabeth and P&O Cruises' Azura.

 

While the world's second largest liner, The Independence of the Seas, is the first Royal Caribbean cruise liner to be home ported in the UK sailing full-time from Southampton and made its first departure last Sunday (25 April).

 

Cruise is the fastest growing holiday type, the cruise industry grew by four percent in 2009 while the Passenger Shipping Association is projecting 1.65 million people will take a cruise in 2010.
