Blackpool Top Destination For British Staycation

Friday, 16 October 2009

The online accommodation and tourism directory said that Blackpool has proved to be the most popular UK destination for British holidaymakers this year, attracting more than double the amount of enquiries as last year.

And the traditional seaside town enjoyed a last minute boost at the end of summer with 411,936 visits to iknow's Blackpool pages found at www.iknow-northwest.co.uk, registered from August 21st to September 22nd 2009.

The most popular accommodation searches have been for 'affordable guest houses in Blackpool' centre as well as for 'Hotels in Blackpool with swimming pool', with Blackpool's famous promenade proving to be the most popular tourist attraction.

Blackpool was one of the main benefactors of this year's domestic tourism boom which saw many Brits avoid unfavourable exchange rates in favour of UK destinations.

A host of new initiatives have been implemented over the last twelve months in a bid to attract more tourists to Blackpool, including the introduction of a Parisian style cycle scheme allowing residents and tourists to hire bikes from automated stands located across Blackpool.

In early September thousands turned out to watch Alan Carr turn on Blackpool's famous illuminations and Chris Evans and his Radio Two Drivetime team broadcasted live from the event.

iknow-uk.com, which has 12 regional accommodation and tourism websites covering the country's key holiday destinations, said that it had seen record demand for Blackpool this year with the town's hotels and guest houses seeing more than double the demand from travellers as last year.

Marcus Simmons, managing director of iknow-uk.com, said: "It has been a great year for UK tourism and all of our websites have seen an increase in enquiries.

"Blackpool appears to be one of the major winners of the staycation trend attracting on average double the amount of enquiries as it did last summer and the feedback from our customers suggests that it has been their best season for several years.

"We're hoping that the domestic tourism boom will continue as Brits rediscover the fantastic holiday options that are right on their doorstep."

Founded by managing director Marcus Simmons in 2003, with the iknow-yorkshire website, iknow-uk now operates 12 regional websites for accommodation providers including hotels, guest houses, holiday cottages and B&Bs.
