Brits Cruise Through Crunch With Increase Uk Departures

Wednesday, 18 March 2009

An increase in UK departures has seen another record year for cruise holidays, according to new figures.

Almost 1.5 million passengers took a cruise holiday in 2008, an 11 percent increase from 2007*.  The biggest growth area was in UK departures which saw a 23 percent rise., the country's only cruise retailer specialising in UK departures, claims that figure is set to rise further in 2009 as customers seek more cost-effective options.

Director James Cole said: "Cruising is an increasingly popular holiday choice for Brits despite the recession as prices are now comparable with package holidays and many are attracted by the all-inclusive nature of cruise.

"In response to growing demand from the UK market, many cruise lines have increased the number of domestic departures which has brought the cost down further by eliminating the need for additional flights.

"More than half a million British cruise customers sailed from the UK in 2008 and that figure will almost certainly go up in 2009."

While Dover and Southampton are long-standing cruise departure ports, many cruise lines are now choosing to sail from ports including Liverpool, Newcastle, Greenock, Leith,  Harwich and even central London.

James added: "Sailing from the UK provides the access to a broad range of destinations such as the Mediterranean, the Baltic and Fjords and even the Caribbean or New York.

"This year consumers are looking for even better value from their holidays and departing from the UK can bring down the cost of a cruise holiday considerably."
