Sunderland's artistic gems celebrate the Diamond Jubilee

Children from Sunderland have been demonstrating their patriotic spirit by entering a Jubilee themed art competition, in anticipation of the replica Crown Jewels arriving in the city for the first time.

Pupils from four local schools were asked to draw their own version of the Crown Jewels and this Bank Holiday a selection of the best artwork will be on display within the Bridges.

Drawings have been submitted to the Bridges art competition from Hudson Road Primary School, Diamond Hall Junior School, St Paul's CE Primary School and Valley Road Community School.

The children's artwork will then go to a public vote in order to crown a winner from each school. The Bridges is calling on all Sunderland shoppers to review the creative art on display to help select four winners. Their pictures will then be transformed into a canvas to be displayed in the Bridges for all shoppers to view.

Bridges shopping centre and Sunderland City Council have secured the rights to display the replica Crown Jewels, which will be on display from today (1 June) and throughout the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The centre will be the only place outside of the capital where people will be able to get a glimpse of the monarchy's most prized possessions.

On display in Central Square will be the country's most sought after Crown Jewel replicas including the Imperial State Crown, the Queen Mother's Crown, the Sword of State and Queen Victoria's coronation ring and the more recent additions of the Duchess of Cambridge's wedding jewellery including her engagement ring.

Andy Bradley, centre director at the Bridges, said: "This is a fantastic way to involve local children in celebrating the arrival of the replica Crown Jewels at the Bridges. All of the entries to the competition have been outstanding; we definitely have some artistic gems in Sunderland!

"We hope that by showcasing the monarchy's most prized possessions during this momentous time mean can be shared with everyone from Sunderland and that every age can enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime Jubilee fun!"

The votes will be counted on Tuesday 5 June and the winner will be announced on Wednesday 6 June. The replica Crown Jewels will be on display, for shoppers to visit free of charge, at the Bridges during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations (1 - 6 June).
