Designs Unveiled For Regeneration Key Fulham Site

Almost 70 members of the Fulham community attended an exhibition this weekend to see the draft proposals for the regeneration of the long vacant former Mecca Bingo Hall at Vanston Place in Fulham.
Site owner, CP Property Development Limited, held the public consultation event at St John's Church on the 28th and 29th November 2008 in order to seek comments and views from local residents.
The site on Vanston Place was formerly home to a cinema and then a Bingo Hall. The building was extensively remodelled over a number of years to try to remain commercially viable, but was finally closed in early 2007.
Investment into the site will return it to a beneficial use which is in-keeping with the local character and setting. A high quality design and mix of new uses will regenerate this part of Fulham town centre, whilst respecting the needs of local residents. Detailed pre-application discussions have been held with the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.
Local architect, Twigg Brown has designed a traditional brick built Victorian building which will be - keeping with the style of Vanston Place and this part of Fulham Broadway.
The building has been designed to prevent overlooking of neighbouring properties and windows have been located to minimise overlooking. Uses have also been sought which will negate the need for balconies. In addition, the proposed use of the building is 'car free' and will rely on public transport in the area.
As the building gets taller it gets smaller, so that the rooms are further away from the neighbouring buildings. This is a key aspect of the design of the new building.
At ground floor level there will be shop fronts for new shops and potentially a café. At the upper floors academic accommodation is proposed to meet demand from academics studying at nearby prestigious educational facilities.
The site will be actively managed on a 24-hour basis to ensure its smooth running. Victoria Halls will provide an onsite pastoral care and security office around-the-clock.
The regeneration will include 150 self contained apartments, with no late night uses such as bars or discos. Each studio includes a kitchenette, bathroom and a study and will meet the needs of the area's law and medical students, postgraduate and PhD academics.
Local residents welcomed the style and design of the building and were keen to see small local shops in the ground floor commercial area. Exhibition attendees also welcomed the car free nature of the development.
