Ilford Optician Gives Gift Sight Russia

In August Amil Shah, an optometrist from Specsavers in Ilford, headed out to an International Medical Camp in the Republic of Tartastan, Russia on a week-long trip offering potentially life saving treatments.
Mr Shah says: 'The area that we went to was very poor and a large amount of the patients we treated had not had an eye examination for more than 20 years. I was honoured to have the opportunity to volunteer and help so many people - it was a very emotional and rewarding experience.'
During his trip, Mr Shah and the team of opticians carried out more than 1,500 eye examinations and treated infections, cataracts and patients who have lost their sight.
The people that visited the medical camp were also provided with a nutritious meal and additional donations including library books, textbooks, school and stationary and toys.
Mr Shah says: 'We often take the gift of sight for granted in the UK. Volunteering overseas has opened my eyes to how fortunate we are to have eye care so readily available.'
