Livingston Marks Spencer Helps Support Our Soldiers

Wednesday, 16 June 2010

Employees at Marks & Spencer in Livingston are celebrating the outlet's 10th anniversary by raising more than £1,000 for Support Our Soldiers, a charity that helps boost the morale of soldiers overseas.

The charity sends care parcels to members of the armed forces on the frontline in Afghanistan. To help bring a smile to the soldiers' faces Support Our Soldiers make up parcels with hand-picked simple reminders of home including sweets, toiletries, clothes and writing paper.

Forty members of staff raised funds by taking part in a sponsored dress down Easter weekend and a raffle for a football strip signed by the entire Hearts football team. The store also donated all proceeds from ticket sales to the store's 10th anniversary staff party to the worthwhile cause.

M&S Livingston customer advisor Joanna Watt said, "Raising funds for Support Our Soldiers helped make our store's anniversary celebrations extra special. We had great fun coming up with ways to raise money."

Lynne O'Brien, area co-ordinator of SOS Stirling said, "The Support Our Soldiers team has received hundreds of letters from serving soldiers expressing their thanks for parcels received and letters written.  Reading just one of these shows you how important these parcels are, particularly when they represent the good wishes of the public. We rely heavily on the support, and generosity of organisations like M&S to maintain our services."

About Support Our Soldiers

Support Our Soldiers was formed in March 2003 to encourage and provide support for members of the British Armed Forces serving overseas and their families at home.  Since that time, thanks to the overwhelming kindness and generosity of the British public, over 70,000 morale boosting care parcels have been sent out to those on the frontline, and countless families helped through the very difficult time with their loved ones away on tour.
