Local Brothers Win Flurry Awards Snow Sports Competition

Monday, 13 October 2008

It was a triple celebration for the McCormick family this week when three young brothers scooped first places in a recent snow sports competition.

The talented trio from Bearsden, who all train at SNO!zone Scotland, all took part in the big air competition at Aberdeen Snow Sports Centre, part of the Lowlander series of freestyle competitions organised by Snowsport Scotland.

Danny, 16,who is sponsored by SNO!zone Scotland, came first in the over 16s snowboarding competition, which sees the best of the Scottish snowboarding scene battle it out with gravity defying stunts.

The win cements Danny’s place at the top of the rankings in the series and brings him one step closer to becoming Scottish champion.

Meanwhile brothers Matt and Chris, who also train at the indoor real snow slope at Braehead, proved that snow sports talent runs in the family with Matt, aged 11, taking top place in the eight-12’s snowboarding competition and ten year old Chris winning the eight-12 year old skiing competition.

Dad Gerry McCormick said: “We’re incredibly proud of the boys’ achievements. They have only been involved with snow sports for three years but all three have worked incredibly hard to reach such a high standard.

“They have got lots more competitions lined up over winter so we’re hoping that they continue with their winning streak.”

Campbell Orr, co-ordinator of the sponsored riders programme at SNO!zone, said: “Danny, Matt and Chris are regulars on our slope and its fantastic to see how far they have all come in such a short space of time.

“It’s obvious that they are dedicated to their sports and it has been great to see them progress and how they all support each other. We all wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season’s competitions.”

SNO!zone sponsors more than 60 of Britain’s most promising young snowboarders and skiers, allowing them to prepare for competitions on real snow at its centres in Braehead, Castleford, near Leeds, and Milton Keynes.
