Two chefs who work at The Restaurant in Marks & Spencer's Northumberland Street store have won top awards at the British Open Cookery Championships.

The awards were held at the recent Hotelympia trade show in London and featured the celebrated Salon Culinaire International des Londres, a world class culinary competition for chefs with an unrivalled reputation across the world.

Senior Head Chef, Russell Temple and Sous Chef Richard Muncaster, who have both been working at The Restaurant for over three years, won a gold award for the cookery challenge as well as a certificate of merit for New Zealand Lamb, respectively.

The Restaurant was the first M&S table service restaurant and opened in October 2006.  Located on the upper floor, the 22-strong team showcase a selection of M&S food daily, catering for all appetites - ingredients from the M&S food hall are used to create an exciting menu and customers can also enjoy a choice of wines and champagne from the full M&S range.

Russell Temple, 38, Senior Head Chef at The Restaurant, M&S Northumberland Street, was awarded with a gold medal in the paired cookery challenge for a recipe which used pan-fried loin of lamb, seasoned with cracked black pepper with lime zest and juice. Richard Muncaster, Sous Chef here at The Restaurant received an award for a dish which he cooked with New Zealand lamb.  Both the loin of lamb and New Zealand lamb are available in store and feature regularly on The Restaurant's menu.

Russell commented: "This is fantastic recognition of the passion which the team at The Restaurant share regarding the quality and provenance of the food which we serve to our customers on a daily basis. To be presented with two awards when faced with such stiff competition from internationally acclaimed restaurants and chefs is just amazing."

Barbara Heslop, store manager, M&S Newcastle, said:  "These awards are fantastic recognition for the chefs at The Restaurant - the competition was open to premium establishments throughout the UK and internationally so this demonstrates the standard and quality of cooking which our customers are able to access on a daily basis in store."
