Men Its Time To Tackle Your Health

Thursday, 15 September 2011

As a nation of sport lovers, it's likely that most men will be watching the England Rugby World Cup game at the weekend. However, you may be surprised to learn that two out of three men aged over 45 do not get the recommended 30 minutes of exercise five times a week. While only 1 in 3 consider themselves to be fit compared to other men their age.1

New research by the TENA Men: Time to Tackle Your Health Campaign, has shown that men are not getting enough exercise but are increasingly anxious about their health as they age; nearly half worry about developing cancer, more than 1 in 4 are concerned about prostate problems and 1 in 3 are concerned about the prospect of developing bladder weakness.1

Dr. Hilary Jones, spokesperson for the TENA Men: Time to Tackle Your Health Campaign, says: 'The fact that most men are not getting enough exercise is particularly surprising considering that men appear to grow more concerned about their health as they age. It is important that men place more importance on their health, especially as they get older. A common condition that men experience as they age is bladder weakness, which can be linked to an enlarged prostate or can be triggered by a range of medical conditions as well as other lifestyle factors.'

Denton Wilson, aged 54 from Sheffield, is the UK's current number one over 50s natural master bodybuilder and is someone who has experienced the condition first-hand due to being diagnosed with prostate cancer 12 years ago. He says: 'My father died from prostate cancer so I was aware I was also at risk but was still shocked when I was diagnosed. Having bladder weakness as a side-effect from the operation meant I had to stop body building, which was extremely hard for me. I was introduced to TENA Men pads and started using them to manage the condition. I tended to isolate myself and would not go out socially in the beginning as I was worried I wouldn't be able to get to a toilet in time. Once I started doing pelvic floor muscle strengthening exercises (kegel exercises) and using the pads, in combination things got a lot better for me.'

Zoe Brimfield, TENA Men brand manager says: 'Many people wrongly believe that bladder weakness is a condition that only women experience. But it is more common than people think with 1 in 9 men in the UK currently experience some form of the condition, that's around 3.6 million men - enough to fill the stadium at Twickenham 44 times over and Lord's Cricket Ground 128 times over!'

Ms. Brimfield continues: 'Without the right solution, bladder weakness can impact quality of life, leading to feelings of isolation and embarrassment. TENA Men pads specifically designed for male bladder weakness can help men feel fresher, more comfortable and ultimately more confident.
