Millers Daring Dozen Take Great North Run
Wednesday, 15 October 2008
Staff from Miller Construction swapped their hard hats for running shoes and took to the streets of Newcastle to participate in this year’s Great North Run in a bid to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Twelve members of staff from Miller’s Northern region took part in the gruelling half-marathon which started in Newcastle City Centre and stretched over 13.1 miles, finishing in South Shields.
The team consisted of nine staff from the Washington office in Tyne and Wear including Tracey Spenceley, Ashley Baldwin, Rebecca Owen, Rachel Matheson, Jeremy Barnett, Ryan Robson, Darryl Roe, Andrew Bostwick, James Smith. They were joined by Ian Jubb, Steve McManaman, and Andrew Hurcomb from the company’s Normanton office in West Yorkshire.
Tracey Spenceley, who originally put the team together explained: “My mam lost her battle against cancer six years ago, and I know that there are a number of us on the team who have also been touched by cancer in one way or another.
“I was watching the race last year I realised that it would be great way to support the valuable work that Cancer Research UK is doing and decided to put a team together.”
So far the team has raised more than £6,000 in sponsorship from colleagues, subcontractors, friends and relatives.
Ian Jubb, Regional Director for Miller Construction North, commented, “We’re quite an active bunch at Miller so when Tracey suggested the idea we were quite keen to take up the challenge.
“We’re all really proud of what we’ve achieved, in terms of the fundraising and taking on the course.”
