Raf Veteran Prepares For Civilian Employment With Ibp Academy

Friday, 27 May 2011

Sgt Chris Park, an Office Manager at RAF Halton, discovered the perfect formula for seeking employment in civilian life - utilising his service experience to work towards a new qualification with ibp academy.

The 40-year-old, who is currently the Office Manager and Lead IV Centre Co-ordinator for the Apprenticeship Accreditation Cell within Supply and Movements Training Wing, is leaving the RAF in October.

Sgt Park is currently undertaking a L5 Certificate in Leadership and Management Skills with ibp academy having recently completed Level 4. The ELC accredited training provider is delivering an online programme which provides Sgt Park with a variety of learning materials including videos, questionnaires, e-books and a learning diary.

Sgt Park is one of many who have used Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (R/APL) to obtain qualifications with ibp academy. He said: "I am leaving the RAF later this year and was keen to take worthwhile qualifications that would enhance my future prospects of employment. I also appreciate the need to maintain my Continuing Professional Development and to stay current in all learning and development areas.

"I can safely say that all the personnel I have come in contact with during my resettlement are seeking out relevant qualifications to best position themselves to find employment when the transition to civilian life is nearing. I am in my resettlement phase now and have been actively looking at all courses available to me in my remaining time left in the RAF.

"The ibp route offers a fantastic opportunity for military personnel to gain accreditation and worthwhile qualifications rather than 'in-house' certificates which have little or no bearing on 'Civvie Street'. I am hoping that it will help me to find future employment when I do leave the RAF."

Sgt Park became aware of ibp academy through an RAF Halton colleague, 41-year-old Flight Flt Sgt Vince Price, who is undertaking an ibp academy Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Leadership course.

Flight Sgt Price said: "Since working within the learning environment, I have come to appreciate just how important it is to develop oneself both personally and academically. The Level 7 course not only demonstrates my commitment to personal development, it will also help me work towards promotion.

"All personnel leaving the service seek out qualifications to prepare and make themselves as employable as possible within the civil sector. There are specialist workshops available for these personnel to give them the best advice in what qualification streams are available to them and which qualifications will best suit the career path they wish to take.

"We're actively encouraging personnel to undertake these courses throughout their careers rather than just the end so that they can show a natural progression of their qualifications on their CV. Personally I will continue to study throughout the remainder of my career so that I am of the best possible use to the service and also so that I'll be employable when I leave."

Flight Sgt Price requested details from the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) regarding new routes of accreditation for those leaving the service and those looking to gain recognition for prior learning. ILM then put him in touch with ibp academy due to their expertise in the field.

Michael McGuire, a manager at ibp academy, said: "Our courses are ideal for military personnel who are making the transition to civilian life. Through studying with us candidates are improving their chances of securing employment in an increasingly competitive market.

"They can also serve as a conduit to university courses for which candidates may have previously lacked the entry qualifications."

The ibp academy certificate programmes are delivered through online and work based learning to develop a range of leadership and management skills, both formally and through students' own self directed efforts. Programmes are split into modules, each with a blend of online learning, videos, readings and practical activities. Students submit learning diaries, from which they receive regular feedback, and these also form the basis of their assessment.

ibp academy was set up in 1996 and is an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Centre of Excellence with established links to Edinburgh Napier University. Study programmes for individual students and employers are available both online and through workshop based classes.
