Scottish Budding Baker Rises To Challenge To Be Crowned With

Thursday, 03 March 2011

Baking enthusiast Amy Cooke (age 24) from Motherwell has been named Warburtons Young Baker of the Year after creating a unique recipe for a brand new loaf in a heated bake-off against seven other regional finalists set up by Britain's favourite family baker.

Following her success in the Scottish heat of the competition, Amy, who attends Motherwell College in North Lanarkshire, battled against the seven other regional winners from across the UK to win the title at the national bake-off at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton.

Amy baked her way to the top with her Warburtons with a Twist multi-coloured loaf which included ingredients such as fresh nettles, sundried tomatoes, onion and sunflower seeds. Part of her prize includes £1,000 prize money and a Warburtons hamper packed with delicious bakery goodies.

Brett Warburton, executive director of Warburtons, and one of the judges on the panel, said: "Warburtons takes great care and pride in baking tasty, high quality products. We were, therefore, delighted to see such high standards amongst these budding young bakers. Like Warburtons, they all share a passion for baking and this came across in each of the finalists' presentations.

"They should all be congratulated for reaching such an excellent standard and it was truly a difficult choice when it came to selecting a winner.  However, Amy showed particular creativity and innovation which caught the eye of all three judges. A special congratulations to her."

Young Baker of the Year, Amy Cooke, added: "I have always enjoyed baking and I am thrilled to have had the chance to show off my skills amongst those associated with such a prestigious bakery that is Warburtons.

"I had a great day at the final and it was wonderful to see all the other loaves made by the finalists. I really enjoyed creating my bread recipe and I am delighted to have won the competition and such a fantastic prize."

The competition was such a great success that it is hoped it will be repeated next year.
