Specsavers Signs Up To Help Whistle-Blowers Paris 2011 Homeless

REFEREES at this summer's Homeless World Cup football annual tournament will be keeping a closer eye on the action thanks to Specsavers.

The optical group is sponsoring the 12 international referees at the Paris event taking place from 21-28 August 2011 at the Champ de Mars. They will be wearing Specsavers-branded shirts as more than 500 players from 64 national teams compete to lift the trophy.

Mel Young, president and co-founder Homeless World Cup, says: 'It is fantastic to have the support of a company as widely respected as Specsavers. This partnership can only be beneficial for the tournament.

'Referees from across the world taking part at the competition will be wearing the new shirts and logos with pride.'

The tournament, now in its ninth year, aims to raise awareness of homelessness and inspire those taking part to make a positive change in their lives. Specsavers' sponsorship of the officials is the first of its kind in the history of the Homeless World Cup.

Susanne Akil, chairperson for Specsavers in Scotland, says: 'The Homeless World Cup gives a sense of hope and pride to people that need it most and is far more than a tournament. We are honoured and privileged to add our voice to the fight against homelessness.'

Specsavers currently sponsors match officials in the domestic football leagues in Scotland and Holland.

The Homeless World Cup is a unique, pioneering social enterprise which exists to end homelessness. It uses football to energise homeless people to change their own lives.

The Homeless World Cup operates through a network of over 70 national partners to support grass roots football programmes and social enterprise development. It works closely with Local Organizing Committees in host cities to run a world-class, annual, international football tournament, uniting teams of homeless people from around the globe.

The first Homeless World Cup annual football tournament took place in Graz in 2003 and welcomed 18 nations. Now it's grown to include 64 teams from 53 countries -including 16 women's teams, for the ninth edition that will take place between the 21st and the 28th of August at Champ de Mars, Paris, France.

The impact is unprecedented. Over 70% of players change their lives for the better: they build their self-esteem; come off drugs and alcohol; move into homes, jobs, education, training; repair relationships; become social entrepreneurs, coaches and players with pro or semi-pro football teams. The Homeless World Cup project involves over 50,000 homeless people throughout the year.
