Thursday, 10 May 2012
Talented Stevenson College Edinburgh student Thomas Mountney has been short-listed for a prestigious national photography award and will see his work showcased at an exclusive London gallery.
The 23-year-old who is studying for a BA in Professional Photography at Stevenson has been selected as a finalist in the Association of Photographers (AOP) Student Awards.
Thomas, who lives in Edinburgh, will now see his work put on display at the Hoxton Gallery in London's trendy Shoreditch, along with other finalists.
The creative student's short-listed image is a still life triptych of retro cameras which Thomas shot separately then spliced onto different backgrounds.
Thomas, who has already completed an HND in Photography at the college, said: "I'm delighted to have been short-listed for this award. I worked really hard on my entry and am pleased with the outcome.
"To be recognised by the AOP Awards is fantastic as it's a very prestigious platform to show your work."
After completing his BA Thomas, who is originally from London, hopes to specialise in commercial photography and is already getting a foot in the door, working as a photographer's assistant in Edinburgh.
He added: "I definitely prefer advertising-led commercial photography and tend to specialise in still life. The course at Stevenson has been great for this as it is geared for professional photography rather than being art based. The tutors are very supportive and really encourage you to achieve the best you can."
Founded in 1981 the AOP Student Photography Awards is dedicated to finding and promoting the best photographic talent coming out of theUK's High Education institutions.
Alan McEwan, head of photography at Stevenson College Edinburgh, said: "The AOP Student Awards are regarded as one of the country's leading student photographic programmes. It's a great way for students to get their work recognised.
"I am absolutely delighted for Thomas and he thoroughly deserves his place in the final. I have no doubt that he will be a great success as an advertising photographer and recognition by AOP Student Photography Awards, which is held in high regard by employers, will certainly enhance his prospects."
Thomas' work will be on display at the Hoxton Gallery, London, from May 16th to 19th with the awards presentation evening, during which the 2012 Student Photographer of the Year will be announced, taking place on May 16th.
