Visitors To Cornwall Up Ashclouds Strikes Drive Visitors Closer To

Tuesday, 11 May 2010

British holidaymakers are heading to the Cornish seaside as the ongoing chaos at airports continues, according to a leading tourism website.

iknow-uk, the UK's leading tourism and accommodation directory has seen a 52 per cent surge from people looking for seaside holidays in Cornwall over the past month.

And experts from iknow say the latest threatened strikes by British Airways staff will continue to push bookings up in the coming week.

Marcus Simmons, managing director from iknow-uk, said:  "The latest announcement that there are more strikes on the horizon for flight customers is just the latest in a long line of disruptions and it seems that Brits are getting thoroughly sick of feeling unsettled and being inconvenienced in this way.

"After such a difficult couple of years, holidays are more important than ever. These figures tell me that the issues surrounding trips abroad are having a real impact on consumer confidence and driving more people to consider a hassle-free UK break this summer."

He added: "One thing that is critical for the UK economy is how the tourism industry here responds to this situation.

"The UK visitor economy accounts 8.2 per cent of GDP.

"If this increases, even by a small amount, as people choose to make the most of the stunning locations the UK has to offer, it could make a significant difference to the fragile economy.

"With people more open to staying in the UK rather than going overseas, we need to make sure that the tourism industry here is set up to give them the best holiday they've had.

"The weather forecast for the summer is hot, and I'll predict that this latest surge in bookings is not the last one we'll see.  We've a fantastic coastline in Britain, and some amazing countryside just waiting to be discovered."

Founded by Marcus in 2003, iknow-uk operates 14 regional websites for accommodation providers including hotels, guest houses, holiday cottages and B&Bs.  The sites are visited by almost a million users each month.
