BEATTIE RAISES CASH FOR HOSPICE IN TRIBUTE TO FUN-LOVING MUM
Tuesday, 19 December 2017
STAFF at Beattie, the integrated communications agency, have been carrying out Simple Pledges to raise cash for a hospice in tribute to a fun-loving mum.
Sharon Webster, 60, developed cancer after living with Multiple Sclerosis for 20 years, and passed away on September 9 at the North Devon Hospice.
Her daughter Samantha Banks, an account manager with Beattie, joined colleagues in the London office and raised a total £675 by doing fun and silly activities which she knows would have appealed to her mum’s wicked sense of humour.
She said: “My mum loved to tell jokes and always said Multiple Sclerosis stood for ‘Make ‘Em Smile’. So when my workmates surprised me with their fun fundraising plan for the hospice, I knew it would raise some big smiles in the office.
“Mum was only in the hospice for nine days, but my Dad and I were blown away by the care and love from the staff. From the doctors and nurses to the volunteers in the canteen, they went out of their way to help us through the hardest time of our lives. We’ll never forget mum telling her jokes to the nurses and while we can never repay them, I hope the money raised will help another family.”
Beattie staff (pictured with Sam, centre, in checked shirt) carried out a number of Simple Pledges which included individuals being sponsored to do an hourly tea round for the entire office for a whole day, or not to swear for 24 hours. One loved-up newlywed was paid by colleagues not to mention her husband or their recent nuptials for a total of seven days.
In the space of a week, they also did a 5km fun run, a karaoke sing-off, a lunchtime games event, and a comedy joke-off, in which participants paid an entry fee.
After company president Gordon Beattie matched every staff donation pound for pound, the final total of their fundraising efforts came to £675.50.
North Devon Hospice covers one of the largest geographical areas of any hospice in the UK – spanning 800 square miles. Staff look after around 3,000 people every year, supporting patients and families as they receive specialist care both at home and at the hospice.
Keely Dempsey, Head of Care at North Devon Hospice, said: “We are here for patients and families through the toughest of times, but this is only possible thanks to amazing people like Samantha and her colleagues at Beattie Communications.
“The funds raised will help the hospice care for those affected by cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. Samantha and her family have seen how much of a difference this makes, and we are so grateful that she is now raising funds to ensure other families get this same level of care in their time of need.”
