Cardonald Students Get Inspired

Friday, 02 October 2009

Pop punk royalty will visit Cardonald College Glasgow on Tuesday 6th October as Inspiral Carpets frontman, Tom Hingley, drops in to give a guest seminar to students.

Tom will not only give Sound Production students an insight into the influential Inspiral Carpets' success and his experiences with new band, The Lovers, he will also give students and staff a lunch time to remember with an acoustic performance live in the college.

Before his lunch time gig, Tom will guide NQ and HND students through a song writing session - where he will outline how to craft a song and will write a potential hit with the students there and then.

He will also give an industry skills session, where he will give advice on how to break into the music industry, take a look at the ins and outs of contracts and publishing deals, and share his years of experience in the tough music world.

Iain Shand, a senior lecturer in Sound Production at the college, approached the iconic frontman when he played a gig in Kilmarnock earlier this year, and asked if he'd be interested in talking to students on Iain's course. Tom was delighted to oblige and his visit is much anticipated by the college's staff and students alike.

Iain said: "It's a real pleasure to have Tom come along and speak to the students - and treat the college to a live experience of his music. His insight into the music industry will be of huge value - it's really important for our students to soak up as much actual industry experience as possible, along with studying and practicing the mechanics of it.

"There's already a buzz in the college about Tom's performance and I'm sure there will be a few more Inspiral Carpets fans at Cardonald by the time the day is over!"

Tom Hingley said: "I'm really looking forward to visiting Cardonald and meeting with the students there. I remember only too well what it's like starting out on the music scene and hopefully I'll be able to offer some worthwhile advice on how the industry works - whether you're a performer or working behind the scenes.

"It will be great to hear what the students have to say about the industry and find out what their ambitions are. I'm also really looking forward to performing in Glasgow again - hopefully the students will appreciate the music as well as the advice!"

Tom will also play a full gig in Glasgow - at the Captain's Rest in the west end of the city - later that evening.
