Chance to explore Park’s history

Locals and history buffs have the chance to explore the fascinating history of Dalkeith Country Park during a special Discover Dalkeith tour on 10 September.

The guided walk will take visitors on a journey through its past and how the Park has been shaped by each generation of the Buccleuch family.

Julie Merrilees, Visitor Services Manager at Dalkeith Country Park, said: “The Park is steeped in history and this tour is a fantastic opportunity to share its rich heritage.

“Our Ranger will be revealing lots of fascinating facts including exactly what the laundry maids used for stain removal when our Laundry House was in operation.

“Booking is essential therefore I’d urge anyone interesting in delving into Dalkeith Country Park’s past to reserve their spot as soon as they can.”

The Park has belonged to the Buccleuch family for more than 300 years and has been used for a variety of purposes in that time.

The magnificent Dalkeith Palace was built in 1711 for the first Duchess of Buccleuch and welcomed many infamous guests including Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745, during the Jacobite rebellion.

The Park has also served as a base during the First and Second World Wars.

Its picturesque grounds date back much further than the Palace, with some of its trees thought to be more than 900 years old.

Most recently, Dalkeith Country Park underwent a £7million investment which saw the creation of Restoration Yard, a retail and leisure destination in the Park’s stableyard, and Fort Douglas playground.
