Emerging Condition Tops Agenda Bda Event

A new and hotly-debated emerging condition is among the topics under discussion at a conference of leading dietitians and other healthcare professionals.


The subject of gluten sensitivity - a newly discovered pathology which is thought to affect far more people than are currently diagnosed with coeliac disease - heads the agenda for those attending the learning event hosted by the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Gastroenterology Specialist Interest Group and sponsored by the Dr. Schär Institute.

Professor David Sanders, Consultant and Honorary Professor in Gastroenterology at Royal Hallamshire Hospital and University of Sheffield, is one of the leading researchers into gluten sensitivity and will open the event- with a presentation updating delegates on gluten sensitivity.

Professor Sanders said: "Gluten sensitivity is a new and exciting area for both practising clinicians and researchers - if you are involved with patients with coeliac disease then it is inevitable that this novel field will also become part of your clinical practice."

Other speakers at the event include Anne Holdoway, who will update members on prescription restrictions, gluten free labelling, and on the calcium requirements and recommendations for patients with coeliac disease; and Professor Kamran Rostami, clinical lecturer at University Hospital Birmingham, who will give a presentation on managing patients with persistent symptoms.

Expert patient, Jean Foster, will close the event with a session on the way forward for effective management of those with coeliac disease.

The event, entitled Hot Topics in the Management of Gluten-Related Disorders, will take place at the Nowgen Centre, Manchester, on November 10, 2011, from 12.15 to 4.30pm. Lunch is included and the event is free for members of the BDA's Gastroenterology Specialist Group, or £20 for non-members.
