Exploiting Mobile Technologies To Improve Health

Monday, 30 July 2012

Aberdeen's most shopped destination, Bon Accord & St Nicholas centre, has shown its commitment to sustainability and retailer costs by using LED technology in its new lighting system.

The centre is owned by the Scottish Retail Property Limited Partnership, a joint venture between Land Securities and British Land and the shopping centre is the first of Land Securities' four Scottish centres to use this technology.

The company enlisted the help of Zumtobel Lighting, a supplier of integral lighting solutions, to install the impressive structure during the centre's recent £8million refurbishment.

Colin Kennedy, Land Securities development manager, said: "LED technology is becoming increasingly popular with developers due to its long life and low energy. We wanted to explore how the use of this equipment could improve the lighting levels, while also complementing the new finishes in the centre."

Throughout the project, Zumtobel worked in close collaboration with renowned architect Gareth Hoskin to design and create a series of bespoke circular LED light fittings to be used throughout the shopping centre.

A number of prototype fittings were also developed in order to ensure that the final products met all technical requirements requested by Land Securities.

Colin added: "We are extremely pleased with the result. An appealing element to installing the system was the reduction in lamp changes, as this has lowered maintenance costs for the retailers. We also have a balance on daylight and artificial light to give optimum energy consumption - which was another key component of the design.

"The technology has a sleek, modern appearance in the new ceiling grid and we have a superb control system which allows us to achieve the optimum settings required. It can also identify defects and trouble shooting from a remote computer, which is a fantastic tool."

Mark Russell, Lighting Solutions Consultant at Zumtobel Lighting, said: "We were able to supply a bespoke energy efficient LED solution and a complete package of lighting, controls and emergency luminaires to Land Securities.

"We achieved the required light levels even with a minimum number of fittings, which were still of high uniformity, and our lighting management system was a paramount factor in the amount of energy saved as the luminaires can be digitally and manually dimmed up and down throughout the day as required."

As well as the upgrading of the lighting system during the refurbishment of the Bon Accord and St Nicholas Centres, the improvement also included a new food terrace, which includes top brands Yo! Sushi, Café Rouge, DiMaggios and Pret a Manger as well as stylish new floors, walls and entrances.
