FASHION GRADUATES GAIN EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH ICONIC BRITISH RETAILER
Tuesday, 29 January 2013
A GROUP of talented fashion students have won the accolade of a lifetime from a UK fashion brand synonymous with style, luxury and trend-setting.
The six creative students from GCU London – the postgraduate campus of Glasgow Caledonian University – were selected from 50 of their fellow graduates as the winners of a project to create, purchase and display a potential new menswear line for über cool fashion retailer AllSaints.
The group worked tirelessly to build an assortment plan, create a collection and range board, draw up plans to purchase the line and created a mock-up of how they would allocate and display the range within Jack’s Place store in Spitalfields as part of AllSaints’ A/W 13 collection.
A total of 50 MSc International Fashion Marketing students from GCU London were split into nine groups when the project was commissioned by AllSaints late last year.
Each group submitted their presentations to the programme staff before Christmas and the top three were selected to present their creations to representatives of AllSaints on Thursday (January 24) along with Sue Scanlan who teaches the International Fashion Buying and Logistics module at GCU London, who together picked the overall winner.
The winning group consisted of Lei Huang, Xiaoxiao Li, Xue Li, Waroon Pastanapanyasat, Pu Wang and Shanshan Zheng, whose ideas may actually be used when AllSaints designs its new menswear range. Each member of the team also received a £50 AllSaints gift voucher for their hard work.
The students were tasked with drawing up a creative board for AllSaints’ latest range – business attire with attitude for the brand’s men’s range.
They had to create a trend board to depict the most relevant trend for A/W 13 and then create range boards which included colour palette, fabric selection and silhouette details for the new line.
Linda Shearer, Programme Leader of the International Fashion Marketing course at GCU London, said this had been an incredible opportunity for students.
She added: “It’s not every day our students get the chance to work so closely with a real, leading, fashion retailer as a client and AllSaints have been so good in supporting our students dedicated to contributing to the fashion market.
“This is what our students love, this is why they do this course. This sort of project makes it possible to imagine your work really contributing to high street fashion. Since 2010 AllSaints has supported those studying at GCU London and has awarded 20 students with full scholarships to the university’s MSc International Fashion Marketing course - we have been thrilled to work with them.”
AllSaints, which was involved in putting the brief together, said this had been a great opportunity for the fashion students to show the iconic retailer what they can do.
AllSaints said of the presentations: “The standard of the creations presented to us were really terrific and it was genuinely difficult to choose just one winner but our overall winning team really deserves the plaudits. Clearly a lot of hard work, time and effort went into their presentation and we were delighted to name them as the winners.
“This was the first time we had ever tasked a project like this to graduate students and we were definitely not left disappointed. Every student who took part should be extremely proud of themselves.”
GCU has earned an international reputation for the high quality of its fashion and luxury brand courses, which equip students with the creative and practical skills for professionals working in the luxury brand marketing and management sector.
