Four 10 To Dine Out This Christmas
Tuesday, 30 November 2010
A new survey has revealed that around four in ten of us are planning to let somebody else take the strain this Christmas by eating out.
The poll was conducted by tourism and hospitality specialists iknow-uk, which lists thousands of restaurants on its 18 regional websites across the country, to find out just how many people will be avoiding cooking Christmas dinner at home.
More than a thousand people were surveyed and were also asked why they were choosing to dine in a restaurant.
The most common answers were avoiding the stress of creating a perfect dinner (77 per cent), avoiding having to wait on family they don't really like (63 per cent) and price (43 per cent) with eating out actually proving cheaper than buying your own turkey and all the trimmings.
Whilst the traditional British food such as turkey or a roast dinner is still the most popular meal (59 per cent) many people will be choosing to eat cuisine from around the world including Indian (18 per cent) and Chinese food (11 per cent).
Of those surveyed, people in the South East were the most likely to eat in a restaurant on Christmas Day with 44 per cent planning to dine out.
Marcus Simmons, iknow-uk managing director, said: "A traditional Christmas turkey dinner can be tricky to cook as it often takes all day and you have to ensure that the timings are all correct to ensure that everything is ready at the same time.
"Add to that the extra pressure of entertaining additional family members and it can make the day a disaster for the chef in your family.
"Although it's not traditional, booking a table at a restaurant makes the day far less stressful, meaning that everyone gets the chance to relax and enjoy themselves and as our research shows more and more of us are planning to eat out this year.
"It also usually means that everyone gets a choice of what to have and there's no need to worry about what to cook for those people who don't like turkey. Alternatively as many people will do this year you can avoid tradition completely be enjoying your favourite food from elsewhere in the world.
"When your really think about it, why would you go to the effort and expense of making your own when we have so many fabulous restaurants able to do it so much better?
"However, it's worth remembering that it's Christmas for those serving you too, so don't forget to tip generously!"
