Go West For Oktoberfest

Wednesday, 06 October 2010

Beer lovers across Scotland are going west this month to enjoy a taste of Bavaria at WEST Brewery, Bar and Restaurant to celebrate 200 years of the Oktoberfest.

WEST has brewed a limited edition Oktoberfest beer which will be served during the month-long festival at the iconic Templeton building on Glasgow Green - along with a host of free entertainment and music throughout the month from the WEST Oompah Band with remaining performances on the 8th and 22nd October.

The brewing team at WEST has been busy crafting Bavarian-style beers for the event, from crisp cool lagers through to clean-tasting wheat beers to take visitors on a unique cultural adventure.

WEST's existing popular brands include palette enlightening brews such as St Mungo lager - a homage to Glasgow's patron saint and already a favourite in top venues around the country including Turnberry, The Scotsman Hotel and The Blythswood Hotel - along with Hefeweizen, Munich Red and Dunkel.

Award-winning head chef Callum Hall and his team will also be on hand cooking up schnitzels and Nuremberg sausages, along with WEST's favourite fish and chips in wheat beer batter.

WEST - established in March 2006 by native Bavarian Petra Wetzel - is the only UK brewery exclusively brewing Scottish lagers and wheat beers in accordance with the German Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot) of 1516, the oldest food law in the world. This means they consist of only the four core ingredients - water, malt, hops and yeast and are free from artificial additives and preservatives.

Petra said: "We are excited to launch OktoberWEST 2010 and as we have done over the past few years we've brewed up a wonderful new beer especially to celebrate the festival.

"On our launch night on the 1st of October when we tapped our 2010 OktoberWEST beer we had 350 people eating, drinking and dancing in our beer hall. The atmosphere was simply wonderful and it just felt like being back in my native Bavaria.

"From beginners to beer connoisseurs, music lovers and those who just love great food, drink and a great atmosphere - OktoberWEST has become a highlight of our calendar and we love to see people coming back year after year for a real authentic experience."

Note to editors

WEST beers are available nationally through Matthew Clark, Belhaven  and  all Scottish Waitrose stores and can be enjoyed everywhere from the Met Bar London to the Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh, and the Malmaison Hotel Glasgow.

WEST is currently planning a brewing centre of excellence in Scotland which will take production to 50,000 HL per year and be fully operational in 2011 and include a restaurant, arts centre and museum.

St Mungo Lager is currently the leading brand at WEST - accounting for 80 per cent of current sales.

WEST's mission is to educate the consumer that the vast majority of lagers sold in the UK today under the guise of premium imported brands are mass produced under licence in the UK at a high gravity, diluted and then heavily filtered to remove any trace of actual flavour.

This is seen as out of step with the modern demand for quality ingredients and the more transparent sourcing and modern production methods.

For 200 years the Oktoberfest has taken place in Theresienwiese, Munich, a flat area of about 42 hectare.

The Oktoberfest 2010 will take place from September 18th, 12:00am (noon) to October 4th, 11:30pm. The festival tents open at 10:00am on weekdays and close at 11:30pm. On the weekends, the tents open at 9:00am.
