Idle Opticians Give Early Christmas Present To Local Charity

Thursday, 16 December 2010

AN INITIATIVE run by the Shipley Rotary Club to provide under-privileged children with gifts this Christmas has received a significant boost from a local opticians.

The club has supported the Christmas Tree Appeal for 18 years and relies on donations from local businesses and residents to provide children from more deprived backgrounds with a Christmas present. Specsavers in Market Square has contributed 35 presents.

As a result of the recent bad weather and economic climate this year's collection was smaller than previous years but, thanks to local businesses such as Specsavers pulling out all the stops, more than 300 presents have now been donated.

Bhrat Phakey, store director of Specsavers in Idle says: 'Staff and customers have been incredibly generous over the last couple of weeks and we have been overwhelmed by the number of gifts we have managed to collect.

'We know that money can be tight at this time of year, especially in the current climate, but it's reassuring to know that colleagues and customers are more than willing to spare a thought for a worthwhile cause.'

Terry Slocomb, from the Shipley Rotary Club adds: 'Specsavers has been a life-saver this year. As a result of the weather, we were woefully short of the number of presents that we required. It's thanks to this store and its wonderful customers that we have far more to donate to this fantastic cause.'
