Its Big Smoke Anna Follows Fashion Dream

Thursday, 17 November 2011

Glasgow girl Anna Galbraith has been awarded a prestigious industry scholarship to study at GCU London, courtesy of leading fashion retailer All Saints.

The 23-year-old, from the city's West End, is studying for an MSc in International Fashion Marketing at GCU London's stylish Spitalfields campus in the capital's hip east end. She was one of just five students to be awarded the sought-after scholarship, which will cover the entire cost of the course.

Fashion lover Anna is following in the footsteps of her older sister, who also did an MSc in International Fashion Marketing at GCU's Glasgow campus.

She said: "I've got a degree in French from Glasgow University, and I always wanted to put a foreign language to good use while working in the fashion industry - so when my sister told me about her course I immediately knew I wanted to apply as well.

"Although my sister studied at the Glasgow campus, GCU London was my first choice - and thanks to the scholarship with All Saints I've been fortunate enough to get my first choice.

"My attitude is that if you're going to do a degree in fashion - whether it's marketing, design, or merchandising - you may as well just throw yourself right into the thick of it. London is the ideal place to learn my trade as there are so many opportunities down there."

And Anna has already managed to get her foot in the door with one of the country's top fashion brands.

She said: "I've been lucky enough to get a job at Whistles' flagship store in London. I was working in the Glasgow store and asked if there would be any possibility of a transfer. It's a great experience for me, particularly with the degree I'm doing because it's quite a close-knit company and a lot of trust is put in staff so you do get the opportunity to do a lot of work, and learn a lot as you do it."

Once she finishes her MSc Anna is eyeing up a job in fashion buying - but is still more than happy to keep her options open.

She said: "At the moment, buying jumps to mind immediately, because it's the area I know the most about - but already I've learned so much about marketing in my course that I know by the end of the academic year I'm going to have so many options available to me.

"I'd love to continue my work with Whistles, or work for All Saints one day - and I certainly wouldn't rule out the option of starting my own business either. Right now I'm taking each day as it comes, enjoying London and my course, and I'm really keen to just learn the trade and work my way up in the industry.

"Coming to GCU London to study will enable me to do that."

GCU has earned an international reputation for the high quality of its fashion, marketing and retailing programmes, which equip students with the creative and practical skills that are vital for professionals working in fashion marketing and brand management.

Earlier this year, reflecting GCU's reputation, expertise and commitment in the area of fashion education, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Pamela Gillies was awarded Fashion Innovator of the Year at the Scottish Fashion Awards.

It is the second year that fashion giant All Saints has offered the valuable scholarship. And Anna will now benefit from links with the industry leader, which has its headquarters in Spitalfields.

Stephen Doyle, Director of Fashion and Luxury Programmes, London, said: "The All Saints Scholarship provides an excellent opportunity for students to join the MSc in International Fashion Marketing and is indicative of the company's commitment to education.

"As one of the UK's leading fashion retailers the expertise and insights that it can offer students is particularly valuable. We are very grateful for their generous investment in our students.

"This endorsement by All Saints also highlights its belief in the programme and in the scholars that it supports. Anna has done well to secure one of the scholarships and she joins us with some good industry experience behind her, which shows her commitment and determination to work in the fashion industry."
