June 2018 CALA MAKES A SPLASH WITH SWIMMING LESSON DONATION

Wednesday, 27 June 2018

A local group that supports children with additional support needs and their families has received a donation of more than £1,500 to cover the costs of hiring Banchory Swimming Pool for lessons over the next year.

Supporting Children in Learning for Life (SCILL) runs a variety of youth classes as well as parental support groups including weekly swimming lessons during term time.

The group was awarded the funds through CALA Homes’ community bursary initiative.

Lucy Tame, Co-Chair at Supporting Children in Learning for Life, said: “We organise activities for children with additional support needs, who often find it difficult to access out-of-school activities.

“Our swimming lessons are very popular and we often receive fantastic feedback from parents who have noticed that the lessons have helped to build self-confidence, wellbeing and pride as well as developing swimming ability.

“For many of our children, time in the water is very therapeutic, building muscle strength and lengthening muscles that have become tight.

“We’d like to thank CALA for this very generous donation which will help to ensure our classes take place throughout term-time over the next year.”

SCILL was established in 2003 by a group of parents of children with additional support needs. Today it has more than 500 members comprising parents and professionals from across the region.

Emma Gelati, Marketing Manager at CALA Homes (North), said: “I had the opportunity to attend one of SCILL’s swimming lessons and meet some of the children who attend them.

“We are delighted to support such a fantastic group and it was clear to see from my visit, just how beneficial the sessions are for the children.”

Other successful recipients of CALA’s community bursary initiative this year include Pleyfauld Very Sheltered Housing, Sunrise Partnership, Spikin Autism and More (SAAM), Friends of Orchard Brae, Printfield Community Project, Seaton Community Church, Grampian Child Bereavement Network, Aberdeen Riding Club, Home-Start Aberdeen and Police Scotland Youth Volunteers Aberdeen.
