Leeds Accountants Triumph National Worldskills Uk Competition

Thursday, 04 December 2008

Local accountants Claire Redmayne, Kerryl Carter and Danielle Vaughan, all from Armstrong Watson, have been presented with a gold Worldskills UK medal from James Cracknell, OBE at a glittering awards ceremony in London.

The official awards ceremony for Worldskills UK winners was held at the IMAX theatre, London. The girls were awarded the top prize in the Association of Accountancy Technicians (AAT) category after battling against six other teams to win the final round of the contest in June.

Worldskills UK is a portfolio of 70 skills competitions designed by leading industry experts and training providers aimed at students, trainees and employees.  Run annually the aim of each competition is to encourage young people and adults across the UK to excel in their vocational skill area.

The contest challenged the girls' accounting skills including financial accounting and preparing ledger balances, reports and returns. The competition consisted of a regional heat at Knowsley College in Merseyside in April where the students took part in a team exercise to test their technical accounting skills and knowledge against 5 other teams from the North West.  After qualifying from the heat, the students then competed in the final in London in June against other qualifiers from the three regional heats across the UK.  This involved a further test of their team working and problem solving skills.

This is the first year that the winning team has been eligible to participate in WorldskillsUK after studying for the AAT Accounting Qualification - Level 3.

Louise Duffy, Training Schemes Manager at Armstrong Watson, comments "The competition offered a fantastic opportunity to compete against some of the best accountants in the AAT category and it was a real coup to walk away with one of the the top awards "

"It was an honour for our students to meet James Cracknell and accept their awards from him at the official ceremony! We will be looking to put forward a team for next year's competition and score another fantastic win for Armstrong Watson."

Sue Kirkham, partner at Armstrong Watson enthused "All of us at Armstrong Watson are immensely proud of the trio's achievement and it is testament to their hard work, professionalism and dedication that they won the AAT category against some very tough competition."
