Leeds Firm Walking Towards Charity Success

More than 30 members of leading UK property consultant GVA Grimley are lacing up their walking boots to complete a sponsored walk in excess of 28-miles for the Candlelighters Trust.
On 1st April 2010, GVA Grimley's Leeds office will be swapping their desk jobs for the gruelling 12+ hour trek which includes 5,000 foot of ascent between Kilnsey Crag, Buckden and Malham and back home again.
The charity mission is particularly poignant as colleague Steve Greenwood and his family are experiencing first hand the support that is provided by the Candlelighters Trust as his son undergoes treatment.
The Yorkshire-based charity is dedicated to supporting children with cancer or serious blood disorders and their families. It also heavily promotes and seeks funding for research into childhood cancer.

Last year 15 members of the GVA Grimley team completed the same gruelling walk in aid of the Roundtable's Children's Wish Campaign.
Established in 1976, the Candlelighters Trust is a charity formed and run by parents of children who have or have had cancer, ex-patients and the medical staff who treat them.
This year the specialist services for rare childhood diseases are combining to one base in Leeds General Infirmary. This will greatly increase the level of care available and means that sick children will no longer have to be transferred between Leeds' two hospitals.
It costs more than £1 million to run the specialist services each year and the charity heavily relies on public donations. This year resources are further strained as the Candlelighters Trust needs to find an additional £500,000 to facilitate the move.
Sally Amos, of the Candlelighters Trust, adds: "The move is a great opportunity for us to improve the environment that the children and their families unfortunately spend so much time in.
"Simple things like kitting the rooms out with armchairs that convert into beds for parents to stay overnight, providing TV and internet access so children can keep in touch with friends and school work all needs to be installed.
"Decorating the ward in a child friendly and stimulating way and providing toys and games go a long way to help pass the long hours that the children have to spend in hospital. All these things make a big difference but all cost money that we simply don't have."
Every year more than 120 new patients are referred to the charity for care and more than 100 children are treated each week in the outpatients clinic.
