Local Optician Celebrates 50Th Birthday Store Anniversary Same Day

Wednesday, 29 July 2009

A double celebration is planned at a local opticians this Saturday (1 August) as the store director's 50th birthday coincides with its fifth anniversary.

Geoff Harper, who launched Specsavers in Wetherby'a Horsefair Shopping Centre in August 2004, is looking forward to celebrate the two significant milestones in his life.

'The time has simply flown by since we opened Specsavers here, but we've come a long way in the last five years. The size of the team has increased and we have developed and improved our service by investing in new equipment and expanding into new areas such as hearing care.'

Last year the store was installed with a fundus camera - the latest state-of-the-art eye testing equipment which enables a more comprehensive health assessment from the eye examination process.

Mr Harper explains: 'The fundus camera has been a great investment as the specialised low-power biomicroscope takes photographs of the retina which can be used to detect glaucoma, diabetes, inflammatory disorders, age-related macular degeneration and vascular. The images can also be saved as a permanent record of eye health for comparisons during the customer's next visit.'

To celebrate the combined birthday and anniversary, throughout August Specsavers in Wetherby is offering one customer a week a full refund on the cost of their glasses*. In addition, on the birthday itself, every customer who purchases a pair of specs will receive a free bottle of bubbly.

Mr Harper concludes: 'The key to our success has been listening to our customers and ensuring their needs are central to everything we do.

'We have been overwhelmed by the local support we have experienced over the years, not only for our business, but also for the charity and community work we have been involved in. Over the last five years we have collected over 5,000 pairs of unwanted specs from local residents, all of which have been donated to Vision Aid Overseas for use in the developing world.

'It's been a fantastic five years and we're delighted to be celebrating this milestone with our colleagues, customers, friends and family and hope that many of them will come along and join in the festivities on the day.'
