Local Solutions Launches Second City Centre Shopmobility Service

Thursday, 22 September 2011

Leading North West social enterprise Local Solutions is excited to be launching its second Shopmobility service through a partnership with St Johns Shopping Centre and Liverpool's City Central Business Improvement District.

The new service will complement Local Solutions current service in Liverpool One and will help it reach many more people with mobility needs. The Shopmobility will enable local shoppers to access the city centre more freely using equipment such as electric scooters and powered wheelchairs.

Louise Ellman who is the Labour/Co-operative MP for Liverpool Riverside and Chair of the Commons Transport Select Committee officially launched the new shop at a  celebratory event which took place at the new base at St Johns Shopping Centre, 131 George's Way, on Wednesday 21 September at 3.30 p.m.

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Frank Prendergast was also in attendance at the event to join staff, volunteers and stakeholders to celebrate their new partnership. Louise thanked everybody for their contribution for bringing this scheme to life and commented on the spirit of partnership between St. Johns and Local Solutions, which made this happen.

The new store will also sell various mobility aids such RADAR keys, a selection of aids and adaptations including folding walking sticks and rain covers and there will be a selection of information about services and organisations that can support people with restricted mobility.

Opening times are Tuesday to Saturday 10am until 3pm although provision can be made for people wishing to access the service outside these times. Long term hires are also available.

Steve Hawkins, Local Solution's Chief Executive, commented; "Our mission at Local Solutions is to improve the quality of life, especially of the most vulnerable in our community. This new service at St Johns will complement the Shopmobility at Liverpool One to ensure that fewer older and disabled people are excluded from our wonderful city centre. I congratulate Land Securities and City Centre Management for their foresight in recognising the needs of our more vulnerable citizens - it is so good to see that Liverpool remains above all, a caring City."

Ian Ward, centre director at St Johns, added: "The launch of Shopmobility will be a huge benefit for our local shoppers and I'm thrilled that the store will launch within St Johns.

"Shopmobility will provide vital equipment for those who face mobility issues and will ensure they can get around St Johns and the city centre with ease and enjoy their shopping experience."

Ged Gibbons, Chief Executive of City Central BID, said: ''It's vital we make it as easy as possible for people of all abilities to navigate through Liverpool city centre and shop with ease. This end of the city centre has huge footfall with Queen Square bus station and Lime Street and Central train stations so we're delighted to support this Shopmobility service at St Johns. It will be an invaluable resource and an important element of making Liverpool a first class customer friendly city.''
