Merchant Homes and Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership have commenced works on a £2.7 million housing project in Lochmaben.

Leading Scottish property developers, Merchant Homes, will develop and oversee construction of 20 properties on Glebe Terrace after being awarded the contract from Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership.

The properties are expected to be completed by March 2010 and will comprise of a mix of two and three bedroom designs with all homes being made available for affordable rent.

Alan Brander, Managing Director, Merchant Homes said: "This is a significant project for the area and one we are delighted to be part of. We've worked closely with Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership to establish the housing need in the area and look forward to progressing on site and bringing our quality designs to the people of Lochmaben.

"Our aim is to make this project a big part of the community and we've already managed to get assistance from local suppliers and sub-contractors. We've been looking at the bigger picture for the area and want to create a development that everyone will be proud of and that residents want to become part of. "

James Shirazi from Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership, said: "DGHP are delighted with the progress Merchant Homes are making with the construction of this much needed development.  Lochmaben is a high demand area and these family homes have been designed to meet existing needs and for people on the waiting lists.  We are grateful to the Scottish Government for £1.8 million of HAG funding and to Dumfries and Galloway Council for supporting the project."
