Ms Launches Largest Meet Farmer Initiative Across Uk Beginning Bluewater

Monday, 06 October 2008

This Friday, 10th October, M&S is launching its first nationwide ‘Meet the Farmer’ programme at the M&S store in the Bluewater Shopping Centre.

It will be the first time a high street retailer is linking its farmers with consumers in this way, to celebrate the best of British farming and introduce customers to farmers in their region.

The campaign will cover all areas of the UK, offering customers the opportunity to meet the people who grow their food at their local M&S store, learn more about where their favourite M&S food comes from and how the retailer works with farmers to create new varieties and deliver the best quality produce to customers.

Mark Ranson, M&S’ Agricultural Manager says: “We work with fantastic farmers in Kent across a huge range of produce - from milk to chickens to tomatoes, all of which we are really proud and customers are always asking about where the products come from so we thought it would be a good opportunity for them to meet the people behind the food they eat.”

Key M&S local suppliers including growers of strawberries, apples and tomatoes from Kent will visit the Bluewater store to meet customers and talk about how some of their favourite products make their way on the shelves.

As part of M&S’s ongoing eco-plan, Plan A, M&S is committed to supporting British suppliers. This campaign demonstrates M&S’s support of British agriculture and its strong relationships with regional farmers and growers.

Mark added: “The fact that we can offer such excellent quality British products is down to our relationships with our farmers, and we hope lots of our customers will come to the events in-store to learn more about farming in their local area.”

Each month will showcase a different region, from Kent to Edinburgh, with at least one ‘Meet the Farmer’ event each month taking place over two days. Farmers up and down the UK will be celebrating the regional foods available from each area with the opportunity for customers to taste the products and talk to the producer.
