Ms Plan Regional Award Winner Announced Royal Welsh Show

The winner of M&S' first ever 'Plan A Award' at the Royal Welsh Show was announced today (Monday 20th July) celebrating leadership and outstanding practice amongst the retailer's Welsh suppliers.

Rhun Williams, based in Y Felin, Tregaron, Ceredigion and part of the Prince's Trust Lamb Group, won the "Future of Farming" (Young Farmer) award for excellence and commitment to welfare, innovation and environmental practices and collected a prize of £1,000.

The awards, a feature at all four agriculture shows across the UK, were launched to celebrate M&S reaching the halfway stage of its £200m eco plan 'Plan A' and to raise awareness of the high standards achieved by regional suppliers in the areas of animal welfare, environment and ethical issues.

The finalists were stringently assessed by a range of industry representatives from WWF, Defra and NFU as well as M&S management who are heavily involved in the supply chain process.

Steven McLean, Marks & Spencer Agriculture Manager, said: "We have had a superb response to the awards and received many impressive applications from suppliers.

"It was a difficult decision but Rhun's entry really stood out as a result of his outstanding individual performance for not only excelling in his approach to commercial success, innovative thinking and social responsibility, but for exceeding expectations, becoming a leader in his field of work and the high quality product he supplies to M&S."

Winner of the "Future of Farming" category, Rhun Williams, is a lamb supplier for M&S. He impressed the judges with his extensive efforts to reduce the environmental impact of his work by minimising his carbon footprint and encouraging the preservation of wildlife habitats on his land through tree planting and the restoration of hedgerows.

He was thrilled to receive the award and said: "Through working with M&S, I have gained a broader understanding of the supply chain  and have taken part in many of the company's 'Meet the Farmer' events in store, which has been an invaluable exercise in gaining direct consumer feedback and exceeding customer expectations.

"I am a firm believer in the benefits of quality grass fed animals, and it's my plan to continue to improve both the quality of my stock and the farm's carbon footprint."

The awards were open to all producers in Wales to celebrate the important role they play in working towards M&S commitments, which include:

  • becoming carbon neutral
  • sending no waste to landfill
  • extending sustainable sourcing
  •  setting new standards in ethical trading
  • helping customers and employees live a healthier lifestyle
