North West Hit For May Day Bank Holiday

Wednesday, 28 April 2010

A leading tourism website has seen a surge in enquiries for visits to the North West in the run up to May Day.

iknow-uk, the UK's leading tourism and accommodation directory, has seen a 40 per cent increase in visitors to the site looking for things to do and places to stay in the North West, compared to the same time last year. Of particular interest were the May Day festivals at Knutsford and Burnley and long weekend breaks in the Lake District, suggesting a return of confidence in the Cumbrian tourism industry since the devastating floods nearly six months ago.

Marcus Simmons, managing director of iknow-uk, said: "At the end of last year we'd seen a real drop in the number of travellers searching for breaks in the Lakes because people wrongly thought the whole of Cumbria was affected.  But, these new figures show that confidence is back, which is a real positive for the hundreds of local people running tourism and hospitality businesses in the area.

"It's also great to know that people are still marking May Day; it proves that good old-fashioned English traditions are still alive and well."

Founded by Marcus in 2003, iknow-uk now operates 14 regional websites for accommodation providers including hotels, guest houses, holiday cottages and B&Bs.  The sites are visited by almost a million users each month.
