Opticians Fire Brigade Hold Charity Bike-Athon

Thursday, 03 March 2011

AN OPTICIAN at the heart of Scunthorpe town centre has joined forces with Scunthorpe Fire Brigade to step up the fundraising efforts for Jack Marshall.

After hearing of Jack's plight first hand from his cousin Lindsey Cowling, who is the contact lens optician at Specsavers, the staff in store rallied round to devise a fun-filled fundraising day as part of its latest campaign for the Jack Marshall Brain Tumour Fund.

From 9am on Saturday 5 March, Scunthorpe Fire Brigade and the Specsavers team will take it in turns to clock up miles on an exercise bike positioned outside the store in return for donations.

Andrew Mortimer, store director at Scunthorpe Specsavers, says: 'This latest fundraising endeavour is very close to home and we want to support Lindsey and her family whichever way we can.

'We're no fitness experts but with the Fire Brigade onboard to push us through our paces I'm sure we'll solider through. The team is aiming to cycle more than 90 miles between them - the equivalent of a round trip to Sheffield where Jack is currently receiving treatment.

'We'll have collection buckets in store and will be encouraging all customers to dig deep plus Jack will be making a star appearance at 1pm to help rally support.'

Last Saturday the staff all pledged donations to leave their uniforms at home donning football shirts instead and collected much needed cash from generous customers and friends which raised more than £100.
