Primary School Pupils Given Taste College Life

Wednesday, 21 March 2012

Budding young musicians from Williamston Primary School, Livingston, were put through their paces by Stevenson College Edinburgh students during a recent music workshop.

The primary five pupils from Williamston Primary showed off their musical talents when they were given the chance to try out the piano, drums, guitars, ukuleles and percussion instruments during the day long session.

Twelve students from Stevenson's HND Popular and Classical Music course organised the event which took place at the college's Music Box on March 12th.

The 64 primary school pupils who attended on the day took part in four music workshops which included singing, rhythmic work, improv and guitar and ukulele lessons.

The partnership was developed as a student project and is just one example of the initiatives that the music department at Stevenson undertakes with the local community.

Music lecturer, Scott Hannah said: "The sessions were a great chance for our students to show the primary school pupils some of the different elements involved in creating music. It was also the first taster of college life for most of the pupils.

"Music in primary years can be hugely beneficial in developing listening and concentrating skills and encourage team work. Hopefully their experience at Stevenson has inspired them to take up music in some form.

"The HND students were fantastic and organised the entire event, from planning the workshops to booking rooms."

HND Music student, Chris Anderson, said: "The workshops were a lot of fun to organise. It was great having the primary school pupils in for the sessions as it gave us the chance to show them what it is like to study and make music.

"The pupils were a lot of fun to work with and all the workshops went down well with them. I think each child that came benefitted from all four workshops in different ways - which had been our intention from the start."
