RETAIL BOOST FOR SCOTLAND AS £70M RETAIL DEVELOPMENT CREATES
Wednesday, 13 February 2013
A new retail development in the heart of Glasgow’s shopping district is set to create more than 200 new jobs.
Recruitment has commenced at the Buchanan Quarter development, which opens on 22 March and will be host to a number of retail firsts for Scotland, including a three-floor 61,920 total sq ft Forever 21 store, popular American footwear brand Skechers and a flagship Paperchase.
The on-street development, located at the top of Buchanan Street, has been completely transformed by developer, Land Securities. The regeneration of the long-term derelict site on Glasgow’s busiest shopping street has attracted a host of popular retailers to invest in the area, including fat face, Watches of Switzerland, Evans Cycles and Gap.
Nick Davis, Land Securities Development Director, shares his enthusiasm: “We are very proud to be investing in Glasgow and enhancing its reputation as the UK’s top retail destination outside London. As well as transforming what has been, for a long time, a blight on the Glasgow streetscape, we have been able to attract high calibre global retailers such as Forever 21 and Skechers to Scotland for the first time. This is very exciting news for the Glasgow retail scene and shoppers.”
The retail jobs follow more than 100 construction jobs already created when work first started on the project.
The site is also home to Buchanan Gardens – Glasgow’s most exciting residential development - which is situated above the retail offer, overlooking Buchanan Street. The 49 apartments come complete with their own unique sky garden, gym and residents’ lounge.
The flagship Forever 21 is the U.S. brand’s first in Scotland and one of only seven in the UK. The U.S. fast fashion powerhouse will boast three floors, offering on-trend, affordable styles to women, men and girls.
Linda Chang, Global Marketing Director for Forever 21, shares in this excitement and says: “Our new store in Glasgow will bring a slice of California cool to stylist Scottish shoppers in the city. Glasgow is known for being fashion forward and serves as a great location for our first flagship store in Scotland and further expansion in the UK. We are excited to align ourselves with a number of other retailers in Buchanan Quarter for large and eventful Grand Opening Day.”
Paperchase, the UK’s top contemporary stationery and card retailer, will open its third Scottish store in Glasgow’s Buchanan Quarter development. The store, which will be its flagship, will feature an exclusive in-store Tinderbox café.
The new fat face store will encompass a mix of active lifestyle clothing for men, women and kids, including a range of accessories and footwear. Now with 200 stores through-out the UK, the authentic British clothing brand has continued to grow. Using bespoke displays, the new collections will be showcased in antique furnishings and vintage sporting equipment including deck chairs and camping gear, taking shoppers to the new store on a journey whilst browsing the collections.
Creating over 15 new employment opportunities, the fat face store will sit favourably among its new retail partners within Buchanan Quarter. With Forever 21 creating an additional 150 jobs and Paperchase contributing a further 40, the Glasgow venture is set to improve employment within the retail sector.
