Scotland Enjoys Tourism Boom Back Staycation Trend

Monday, 28 September 2009

Scotland's tourism industry enjoyed a major boost this summer on the back of the staycation trend, according to the UK's leading tourism website iknow-uk.com.

The online accommodation and tourism directory said its regional iknow-scotland.co.uk website saw a record 22,055 enquiries in July and August this year, a 10 percent increase on 2008.

Scotland was one of the main benefactors of this year's domestic tourism boom which saw many Brits avoid unfavourable exchange rates in favour of UK destinations.

iknow-uk.com, which has 12 regional accommodation and tourism websites covering the country's key holiday destinations, said that while most areas enjoyed a slight increase, only Cornwall and Yorkshire experienced a higher increase than Scotland with a rises of 14 per cent and 13 per cent respectively.

Marcus Simmons, managing director of iknow-uk.com, said: "It has been a great year for UK tourism and all of our websites have seen an increase in enquiries.

"Scotland appears to be one of the major winners of the staycation trend with a 10 percent increase and the feedback from our customers suggests that it has been their best summer for several years.

"We're hoping that the domestic tourism boom will continue as Brits rediscover the fantastic holiday options that are right on their doorstep."

Founded by managing director Marcus Simmons in 2003, with the iknow-yorkshire website, iknow-uk now operates 12 regional websites for accommodation providers including hotels, guest houses, holiday cottages and B&Bs.

iknow-uk's websites cover the UK's most popular tourist regions and are visited by almost a million users each month.
