Shopping Centre Rallies Troops To Ensure Charity Shop Launch
Tuesday, 06 December 2011
St Johns centre management team has united four contractors to ensure the successful launch of the new Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation shop.
The Land Securities owned shopping centre has provided the retail unit to the charity for free for the next 18 months. But in an extra bid of generosity the centre called upon its contractors to roll up their sleeves and provide their services, for free, to help refurbish the shop ready for opening.
NG Bailey, OCS, Heritage Building Solutions and Andron Facilities Management all went above the call of duty in an effort to ensure the successful launch of the charity shop.
Ian Ward, St Johns centre director, comments: "This is the first time Land Securities has united its contractors to enable a charity initiative to get off the ground. We railed the troops who all donated time and materials to ensure The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation could open its doors without incurring any costs."
The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is the local charity that the centre has chosen to fundraise for during throughout the course of the next year and to date has already raised thousands of pounds.
The Liverpool-based organisation work to combat lung cancer, through funding research, providing support and giving a voice to those affected by the condition.
Matthew Boyle, director of fundraising for The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, adds: "On behalf of everyone at The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, we are delighted to be the official charity partner of St Johns.
"The charity shop launch is the latest of many fundraising initiatives that we will be running in the centre as part of the partnership. All the funds raised go directly to defeating lung cancer, the UK's biggest cancer killer and so we are so thankful to everyone at St Johns and all the other partners for providing us with the opportunity to launch our latest charity shop within the centre."
Peter Curran, senior contracts manager at NG Bailey, said: "When Ian approached us for support there was no question that we'd get involved.
"It's a great initiative for a very well deserving charity and it was a pleasure to provide our time, best efforts and materials to help get the shop doors open and hopefully the tills ringing in much needed funds."
The new store located on St George's Way will be open six days a week, 9am to 5pm. In the run up to Christmas it will sell a mix of festive items and a variety of great gifts for all the family.
In a bid to raise even more funds, St Johns shopping centre has stepped up its charitable pledge by installing a Wishing Well to collect extra financial pledges.
Located on the lower level near the Food Court, The Wishing Well will become a central donation area to collect money for the centres chosen charity The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.
Ian Ward, centre director at St Johns, added: "I know times are tough but we can all still do our bit for charity. The Wishing Well is designed to let shoppers donate as much as they can afford in an unpressurised way at their leisure and we hope this will be a far more effective way to raise funds than have people stood collecting with buckets."
Earlier this year Ian Ward completed an energetic fundraising initiative by taking part in the Blackpool Promenade 10K run. In doing so Ian raised more than £1,000 and he hopes that his efforts will set a high benchmark and encourage other St Johns retail and management staff to get involved with further fundraising ideas.
