Top Sustainability Accolade For Elements Square Is Uk First
Tuesday, 17 February 2009
Land Securities has been awarded the top industry benchmark of sustainability for its Elements Square development.
The £130m extension to the existing shopping centre in Livingston, The Centre, achieved a BREEAM (Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) Excellent rating in recognition of its high standards.
The BREEAM team has confirmed that Elements Square is the first enclosed shopping centre in the United Kingdom to achieve this accolade.
A team of independent assessors investigated the environmental implications of the development based on set criteria - Elements Square achieved the highest BREEAM rating of 'Excellent' with a score of 74.05 per cent.
The use of sustainable timber, rainwater harvesting, provision of recycling facilities, lighting efficiency, and water efficiency all contributed to Elements Square's Excellent rating.
Neil Carron, Development Manager, Land Securities, said: "We are proud to have achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating which recognises the highest of environmental standards in construction and design. This accolade is testament to our commitment to excellence."
Elements Square adjoins the former Almondvale Shopping Centre to form new retail destination called The Centre, which spans almost 1million sq ft. It has attracted millions of shoppers since its October opening thanks to a strong retail and catering offering.
Land Securities also recently completed the multi-million pound refurbishment of the existing shopping centre, giving it a more bright and modern feel. The changes include new look signage, a new customer services area and glass 'pods' showcasing retailers' products.
Jennifer Bruce, Marketing Manger, The Centre, said: "The refurbishment programme has modernised the existing mall to complement the adjoining Elements Square. The upgrade has been welcomed by shoppers and retailers alike. Being awarded the BREEAM rating is very important to us and demonstrates to our customers our commitment to offering them a complete package, covering everything from the retail offer right through to a sustainable shopping environment."
