College students go far thanks to culinary delights

Two catering students from Cumbernauld College have proved they are cream of the crop after beating off stiff competition to win coveted industry prizes.
Lauren Morton, 22, who is on the College’s City and Guilds Diploma course, got to mix her two loves – food and travel – when she won the chance to study haute cuisine in Switzerland.
Lauren, who is originally from Perth, was one of only 10 Scottish students selected by the Hospitality Industry Trust to visit the renowned Lausanne Hotel School on a four day scholarship.
During her time at the hospitality school in the French speaking part of Switzerland, Lauren attended lessons on working within the hospitality sector, including customer service within fine dining industry, and tried a variety of cuisine including hare.
Lauren said: “I love travelling to new countries and eating so this scholarship was ideal. The Lausanne Hotel School is very upper class and it allowed me to see fine dining at its best. The school is amazing and even has classrooms for wine tasting.
“It was a trip of a life-time and a great experience for my future career within the hospitality industry.”
Fellow student Taylor Ure,17, from Abronhill has also been achieving great feats in the culinary world.
Taylor came out top during the local heat of the Rotary Club Young Chef of the Year competition in November, wowing judges with her coq au vin and white chocolate crème brûlée.
The budding chef will now go on to the regional final being held in Edinburgh in February.
Taylor said: “I was really surprised, but delighted to win the regional heat. I’m looking forward to the Scottish final, although the competition will be tough as I’ll be competing against working chefs as well as students.
“I’ve not decided on my menu yet, but it will no doubt include pineapple as I love to make dishes with it.”
Professional Cookery lecturer Paul Clark praised the hardworking duo. He said: “We have fantastic talent on all our catering courses and the achievements of Lauren and Taylor are great examples of this.
“Lauren learned many valuable lessons while in Switzerland which will put her in good stead when entering into the workplace, while Taylor is picking up new skills and techniques as she advances through the Rotary Club competition – I wish her all the best for the Scottish final.”
