Janet Street Porter shrugs off her age and tries aerial yoga for the first time

BROADCASTER and journalist Janet Street Porter is lending her support to WE100, a campaign that aims to prepare society to live 100 healthy years.

WE100 – a global Merck Consumer Health initiative – hopes to inspire people of all ages to try something new for the first time, and help maintain mental and physical health into old age.

Janet, 70, has attributed her own youthful demeanour to her zest for life.

She says: “As I get older I’m becoming afraid of trying new things, for fear of failure. I’ve noticed I’ve started to get a bit too comfortable in my daily routine – a sure sign that I’m sinking into old age.

“I’ve realised the key to ageing happily and healthily is being brave enough to attempt something new. It could be anything – physical or mental – from learning a language, joining a walking group or speaking to a stranger at a party.

“I recently tried aerial yoga for the first time, despite having given up on traditional yoga before, and I loved it! Who cares that I’m 70? Age doesn’t matter these days.

Janet continues: “I’ve got friends who are happy to sit back and do nothing and I’m making it my personal mission to encourage them to try something new and stave off old age. It’s never too late to try something for the first time – I’m living testament!”

Research by Merck Consumer Health has shown:

·        More than 50% of older people haven’t experienced anything for the first time in the past year

·        60% think they are held back from participating in new experiences

·        More than 1/3 of Brits want to live 100 years or more, while a further 1/2 agree it’s quality of life is the most important part of ageing

·        70% believe age is just a number

·        89% surveyed agree remaining an integrated and active member of society is key to healthy ageing

·        78% believe we need to tackle our negative attitude to ageing

 

WE100 is also asking that everyone help spread the word of the campaign, and encouraging younger people to assist their older friends, relatives and neighbours in their new challenges. Special benches are being installed across the UK, starting in London, as a place for young and old to come together and share their first time stories.
