LAURNA WOODS SHORTLISTED FOR CEO OF THE YEAR

Tuesday, 24 October 2017

Laurna Woods, the CEO of Beattie, the integrated communications agency, is in the running to become Chief Executive Of The Year.

Laurna is one of three CEOs shortlisted for the title by leading HR magazine HR NETWORK.

She said: “Win or lose, I am honoured to have been shortlisted for this prestigious award.”

Laurna, 42, has been the boss of Beattie since 2002. During that time she has grown the business from a pure-play PR agency into an integrated communications consultancy serving 12 industry sectors including health, retail and technology.

She had been a journalism student - working freelance for newspapers and television while at university – when she was headhunted by Beattie and brought on board as an account executive aged 20.

She said: “I just took on every challenge that was thrown at me and managed to get through them one by one.

“Initially I thought this job would be a stop gap until I found work as a journalist – but I’ve never looked back.”

Within six months, Laurna was running a new office in Edinburgh, and by the age of 24 she was one of the youngest board directors in the PR industry.

She added: “Every time a senior person left the company, I stepped in. Gordon Beattie has this saying - that when the big trees are chopped down it allows the saplings to grow.

“That’s what I did. I learned so much about leadership and Gordon has been a real mentor to me for the past 20 years, teaching me that you never give up and always believe in yourself.”

The HR NETWORK National Awards, now in its 11th year, is designed to recognise, acknowledge and reward the champions of the Scottish HR & people industry and associated professions.

The other two contenders are Alban Denton from Loch Duart Ltd and Andy Lothian at Dundee-based Insights.

The winner will be announced at a gala dinner in Glasgow for 800 guests on November 9.

Headquartered in London, Beattie has 16 offices across the UK, Ireland and Canada including Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow.

In addition to Beattie, headline brands include Beattie Tartan, international student recruitment business 11ten and the Only series of specialist marketing boutiques.
